Using Citavi with a Macbook

What you need to know

Citavi is a reference management and knowledge organisation programme (see Helpcard BIB-60-010).

Using Citavi on Mac requires additional measures which are shown below. It explains how to install Windows on a Macbook using a virtual machine.

The Citavi campus license is free of charge for HFU members.

In addition, Macbook users have the option of using other free literary management programs, such as Zotero and Mendeley. However, HFU Libraries only provides support for CITAVI.

What you have to do

  1. Go to the Virtualbox home page: https://www.virtualbox.org/

  2. Click on "Downloads" in the left tab.

  3. Click on the "OS X Hosts" link.

    • The file is downloaded.

  4. Save the file.

  5. Install the file according to the installation instructions.

  6. Open the newly installed VirtualBox program.

  7. Click on "New" in the upper right corner.

  8. Set up the virtual machine as follows:

    • Make sure that "Windows 10" is selected as the version.

  9. Select "Create disk" and click "Create".

  10. For "Disk file type", select the option "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)" and click "Next".

  11. For "Type of storage", select "Dynamically allocated" and click "Next".

  12. Click on "Generate".

  13. Now download Windows 10 Education (without "N") via Microsoft Azure and save the file

  14. Go back to Virtualbox and select your created virtual machine on the left.

  15. Click on "Change".

  16. Click on "Mass storage".

  17. Click on the "empty" entry.

  18. Now click on the CD icon and then select "Select/create virtual optical media...".

  19. Click on "Add".

  20. Select the Windows file in iso format and confirm with "Select".

  21. Complete the set up with "OK".

  22. After that you can start with the installation of Ciavi, see Helpcard BIB-60-010.
