Assigning, editing, submitting and assessing project topics digitally

FELIX 20-130

What you need to know

How can suggestions for project topics be made by students digitally, then collected and made accessible for all course participants? (see step 1)
How can project topics be selected for individual processing? (see step 2)
How can project topics be selected for cooperative/collaborative processing if no groups exist yet? (see step 3)
How can project topics be selected for cooperative/collaborative processing using already existing groups? (see step 4)

What you have to do

  1. Would you like to give your students the opportunity to suggest topics themselves?

    • Use the "Document" course element. Helpcard 30-220 shows you how to insert and configure it.

    • In this course element, you can allow participants to fill a file with their topic suggestions, but not download the file.

  2. Would you like to give students a choice of topics to work on?

    • Use the "Topic assignment" course element(see Helpcard 30-070).

    • Especially recommended if you do not want to assess the submission digitally, or if a return folder is sufficient for the assessment.
(For digital assessment: combine with "Assessment" course element or use the "Task" course element) (Figure 2.1).

    • Make the topics available via the "Task" course element (see Helpcard 30-090).
After you have made the desired configurations in the "Workflow" tab, store your topics in the "Task" tab.
You can then make various settings in the "Assign task" section. By default, students select a topic based on the title and, if applicable, the description of the topic. One topic can be selected by several students.

    • Especially recommended if you want to attach a sample solution to the task or if you want to assess the task digitally (points; pass/fail; individual comment; individual assessment documents) (Figure 2.2).

  3. Would you like to offer a choice of topics for groupwork but no groups have yet been set up?

    FELIX offers two options:

    1.  Use the "Topic assignment" course element (see Helpcard 30-070).
    - Groups are generated independently by FELIX by choosing the topics. To enable groupwork, they have to be administrated manually (e.g. equipped with folders). Therefore, Topic assignment is well suited for a smaller number of groups.
    - Created documents can be submitted through a submission folder and returned through a return folder.
    - Each person in the topic group has their own submission and return folder.
    - By inserting an "Assessment" course element (see Helpcard 30-110), a digital assessment can be made.

    2.  Use an "Enrolment" course element to generate the groups (see Helpcard 30-015) and create a group task (Figure 3.1 and 3.2).

    - Groups must be created manually and do not generate themselves as in the Topic assignment.
    - If you need a lot of groups and you want to equip them with tools like folders, you can create the groups via Member management and duplicate them together with the collaborative tools (see Helpcard 20-011).
    - Students can then enrol in the topic groups you generate via enrolment.
    - Unlike the Topic assignment, only one member of the group can submit a file at a time.
    - The group assignment can be returned for revision and digitally graded.

    • Create and configure a group and duplicate it as explained in Helpcard 20-011.

    • If you want the groups to know more about the topic, enter a description of the topic in the group (under Administration).
In the Enrolment the students can see the description by clicking on the group (point this out in the description of the Enrolment) (see figure 3.1).

    • In the course editor, insert an enrolment module (see Helpcard 30-015) and select the created groups (e.g. named after the project topics) under "Configuration". The participants can then enroll in one of the groups (=themes).

    • Create a group task and assign the group task in the workflow to the groups from the enrolment.
If required, you can leave the task assignment activated in the workflow and store a task assignment valid for all groups in the "Assignment" tab (e.g. framework conditions regarding the task to be completed: presentation, requirements, formatting of the final product, etc.). In this case, specify in the "Assignment" tab under "Task assignment configuration": "Automatic task assignment" and "Your task will be assigned to more than one group" (see Figure 3.2).
Configure the group task as described in Helpcard Internal link opens in the same window:30-100.

  4. Would you like to make topics available for groupwork and groups already exist?
Generate the topic selection via the Group task course element.

    • Leave the task setting activated in the "Workflow" tab and store your topics in the "Assignment" tab.

    • In the "Task assignment configuration" section of the "Assignment" tab, then select whether you want to leave the default setting (group selects task manually, may not view it beforehand and a task may be selected by several groups), or change it.

    • If the tasks (=themes) are to be selected only once, you can select "Selection of task by user" and "Your task will be assigned to only one group". The selection then works on a "first come, first served" basis.
You then need as many topics as there are groups, otherwise one group will go "empty-handed".
You can also have the topics automatically assigned to exactly one or more groups.
