CHAT 10-025

What you need to know

You can configure various settings in your chat window and profile. Below we have selected a few of the options for you and described them in more detail.

What you have to do

  1. Click on your name in the upper left corner to open various settings options.

    • This opens a quick access for certain setting options such as the "Notifications". You can also open "All settings" here.

  2. Click "Notifications" to configure how you want to be notified about new messages.

    • The settings open and you are in the Notifications tab.

    • For example, you can enable desktop notifications to be notified of incoming messages even when the client is closed.

    • You can also activate notification tones.

    • Depending on the messages (direct messages, group chats) you can decide whether you want to be notified at all and if so, whether this notification should be with or without sound.

  3. Further settings (under "All settings" also in the quick access) include, for example, the option to ...

    • ... set another available language under "Preferences".

    • ... make various settings for the visual appearance under "Appearance".

    • Autostart of the client (Fig. 3.1):
To start Matrix automatically in the background after a system restart, scroll all the way down to "General" in the “Preferences” menu item and activate the switch next to the "Start automatically after system login’ option.

  4. Close the personal settings to make further settings in the chat window/client, for example...

... to arrange rooms (step 5)
... to set notification options per room (step 6)
... to arrange people and / or rooms according to your activity (step 7)

  5. Mark rooms as favorites

    • Hover the mouse over one of the rooms in the structure on the left and open the room options (three dots).

    • Select "Favorite" to set a room as a favorite.

    • The room has now been marked as a favourite and will be displayed at the top of your structure.

  6. Use notification options
If required, you can set different notification options per room, which will then become active when the client is closed.

    • Hover the mouse over one of the rooms in the structure on the left and open the notification options (bell icon).

    • By default, the default settings, which you can create in your profile under Notifications (see step 2), will take effect.

    • If you wish, depending on the room, select:
      - "All messages"
      - "Certain terms and keywords" (a mention of your name)
      - not to be notified at all

    • The desired notification options for the room are now saved (indicated by a green check mark).

  7. You can arrange people / rooms according to your activity by moving the mouse pointer over the respective terms people / rooms and open the three-dot menu.

    • The options open up.

    • For example, enable "Sort by" activity and have rooms with unread messages displayed first, with message preview if necessary.
