Setting up a learning path course

FELIX 10-005

What you need to know

With a learning path course, you can visualise the learning progress (progress bar at the top right or left) with the help of completion criteria. In this way, the learning path course fulfills an information function for participants and lecturers.
Learning path courses are therefore particularly suitable for self-study courses, but also for blended learning concepts and often for mapping administrative processes.

Tip: Try out the "learning path" course type from the participant's perspective:

This Helpcard explains how to create a learning path course.

Learning path courses can be created...
... (Step 1) with a course template
... (Step 2) without a course template
... (Step 3) by conversion (with simultaneous copy) of a "conventional" course.
A reconversion is only possible by importing course elements (see Helpcard 30-005)!

On Helpcard:10-006 you can find out how to make settings in the learning path and insert course elements.

A learning path can only be made accessible to those with an HFU account.

What you have to do

  1. Set up a learning path course with a course template

    • Log in to FELIX with your HFU account.

    • In addition to an information section on the learning path and the course, the 05 course template offers you modules for communication. Under "Course materials" you can structure your course in modules (thematically or by time period). The content from "Course materials" onwards must be worked through in a linear fashion.

    • Please follow the instructions of Helpcard 10-010 (steps 3-10) to copy the course template.

    • After you have copied and configured your learning path (see Helpcard 10-006), make it visible and accessible to students (see Helpcard 10-030).

  2. Set up a learning path course without a course template

Log in to FELIX with your HFU account.
Click in the "Authoring" area (top).
Click on "Create" (top right) and select "Course". The course type "Classic" is preset.
Select "With learning path" or "With learning progress".

    With learning path
    1. With this option you create a "sequential" learning path that must be worked through in a linear fashion.
Participants can only "jump" between course elements, if this is configurated for a specific area (see HelpCard 10-006).
Useful, for example, for topics that build on each other.

    2. Enter a title for your event and click "Create".

      • Do not use umlauts and avoid all other special characters except (), /\, -, _. Use the following routine for clarity:
Title_ if applicable, degree program _ (your last name), example: Marketing_WNB_(Huebner).

      • The learning path course is created. The settings open.

    3. After you have created and configured your learning path (see Helpcard 10-006), make it visible and accessible to students (see HelpCard 10-030).

    With learning progress
    1. With this option you create a learning path without sequence.
Participants can, like in a classical course, "jump" between course elements.

Mandatory course elements must still be completed for visible learning progress - but it is not necessary to complete one element to be able to see another. The completion of course elements can still be used for self-structuring and is displayed in the bar (left) and in the learning progress.

      • The learning path course is created and the settings open.

    3. After you have created and configured your learning path (see Helpcard 10-006), make it visible and accessible to students (see HelpCard 10-030).

  3. Convert a conventional course to a learning path
Log in to FELIX with your HFU account.
Select a course that you would like to convert into a learning path.

    • Under Administration, click "Convert to Learning Path Course".

    • The conventional course remains unchanged.

    • The course is copied and a learning path course is created.
The course view opens. Carry out the following steps to ensure functionality in the learning path course.

    • The desired configuration should be checked manually.
Although a conversion takes place, so that all course elements with contents (such as inserted materials) are preserved, it is necessary to check the course elements manually to ensure a desired progression within the course. Manual configuration is especially important for recurring course elements such as a "link list" or a "forum", which do not require completion.

    • A learning path course cannot be converted into a conventional course! However, elements from a learning path course can be imported into a conventional course (see Helpcard 30-005).

    • After you have created and configured your learning path (see Helpcard 10-006), make it visible and accessible to students (see Helpcard 10-030).
