HFU account and two-factor authentication (with Windows 2fast app)

HFUACCOUNT 20-020

What you need to know

You have received a new HFU account.

Please note that from now on you will need two-factor authentication every time you log in to our services (in addition to your HFU account) in order to generate a one-time password.

You can use these instructions if you want to use your workstation computer (Windows) to generate the one-time password (TOTP). To do this, you must install a Windows app.

Please note that you will have to switch back and forth between two applications (browser and app). From now on, you will need this app every time you log in to our services.

What you have to do

  1. One-time login/registration:
We recommend the use of a workstation/PC/laptop:
Open the link External link opens in a new window:https://start.hs-furtwangen.de/en/ in your browser.

    • You will be taken to the start page of the new HFU registration portal. Read everything carefully and then click on the "Start now" button (see Fig. 1.1).

    • The start page with the Microsoft login opens. Enter your new Loginname@hs-furtwangen.de here and click on "Next" (see Fig. 1.2).

    • Enter the initial password and click on "Log in" (see Fig. 1.3).

    • Now change your password and then click on "Log in", see Fig. 1.4 (keep your password in a safe place).

    • Click on "Next" (see Fig. 1.5).

  2. You will now be asked to open the Authenticator app and set up an account. Then select the option "I want to use a different authenticator app" and click on "Next".

    • A QR code will be displayed.

  3. Install the "2fast - Two Factor Authenticator" app. You can find this in the Microsoft App Store.

    • If you have already installed the app, open it and continue with step 5 - "Add account"

    • Open the App Store by entering “Store” in the Windows search field and then clicking on the search result “Microsoft Store”.

    • Search for “2fast” in the search bar of the App Store and click once on the search result “2 Fast” to open the app detail page.

    • Now click on the “Install” button and then follow the further instructions.

  4. During the installation you will be asked to create a data file.

    • Select the "Create new data file" button. In the window that opens, create a folder, e.g. "Security".

    • This is followed by the name and password for encrypting the file. Name the file e.g. 2FA_HFU. We recommend using a password manager to store the passwords (otherwise keep your password in a safe place).

  5. You will now be asked to create an account. Click on "Add account".

    • For input type, we recommend using the QR code. Select "Select key QR code".

    • Now be prepared to quickly switch to your browser.

  6. Now switch to your browser in the Microsoft account and cut out the QR code with the mouse. Then switch back to the app.

    • The assignment is now displayed in the app (under Inputs).

    • If scanning the QR code does not work, you can click on the "The image is not scanned" button instead. You will then receive a code that you can copy into the app (see Fig. 6.3).

  7. Now click the blue "Create account" button.

    • The account has been created and a 6-digit one-time password is displayed.

  8. Now switch to your Microsoft account in your browser and enter the 6-digit numerical code in the "Enter code" input field.

  9. Your account in the 2fast app has been successfully created and registered in your Microsoft account.

    • You will receive a notification of successful completion.

  10. In the future, you will have to log in with your HFU account when registering for our services and enter the one-time password generated in the app in the field in the browser to complete the MFA.

    • Please note that you always need the 2 Fast app for all HFU account registrations.

    • We recommend adding the new computer or an alternative device as an additional verification option before changing computers. To do this, follow the Add additional factor helpcard (HFUACCOUNT 20-030).
