WLAN HFU

WLAN 10-001

What you need to know

You can connect to the internet via the HFU Wi-Fi network using almost any Wi-Fi-enabled device without the need for additional software. Please note the recommended settings in these instructions and ensure that your devices always have the latest software updates.

What you have to do

  1. Requirements

    • You are in the wireless local area network (WLAN) of Furtwangen University.

    • You have a valid and functional HFU account (for more information about the HFU account, see the helpcards on the service page: HFU account).

  2. Settings for “HFU” Wi-Fi

Most current operating systems find the correct settings automatically and only require authentication and, if necessary, certificate verification (required to establish a secure, encrypted connection).

For verification purposes, you can find the settings in detail here:

Instructions for Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, etc.)
    1. Open the Wi-Fi settings (under Settings) on your device (iPhone, iPad).

    2. Select the SSID “HFU” from the displayed Wi-Fi networks and connect (see Figure 2.1, red border).

      • You will receive the certificate query.

    3. Now click on the blue “Trust” button.

    4. Now enter your username from your HFU account and your password (see Figure 4.1, red border):

      Example username for students:

      xyz61234

      or xyz61234@stud.hs-furtwangen.de

      Example username for employees/lecturers:

      xyz5123

      or xyz5123@hs-furtwangen.de

      • You are connected to the “HFU” Wi-Fi network (see Figure 4.2).

    Instructions for Android devices
    1. Open the Wi-Fi network connections on your mobile phone.

      • The general settings (which also include network connections) can usually be opened by swiping your finger down from the top of the screen.

    2. Select the “HFU” network from the list of available networks.

      • The detailed connection settings for the “HFU” network will open.

    3. Enter your HFU account details in the “Identity” and “Password” fields.

      • Example username for students:

        xyz61234

        or xyz61234@stud.hs-furtwangen.de

        Example username for employees/lecturers:

        xyz5123

        or xyz5123@hs-furtwangen.de

      • You do not need to make any further settings, so leave the other fields with their default values.

    4. Scroll down a little. Under “CA Certificate,” tap on the text “Select Certificate.” Then select the option “Trust on first use” (see Figure 4.1).

      • The “Connect” button will now become active.

      • If the “Connect” button remains inactive, the login details you are using may be incorrect or the connection to the network may have been disrupted.

Please ensure you have a good signal strength and check for potential sources of interference. Also, make sure that your HFU account login itself is working and that you are entering both your HFU account and your chosen password correctly and without spaces (e.g., before the start or after the end of the entry).

    5. Tap the “Connect” button.

    6. Finally, ensure that the network connection has been successfully established and that you can use it by checking the status and signal strength (see example in Figure 5.2).

      • The connection to the network has been successfully established.
