Taking part in an online lecture

AVIEW 10-020

What you need to know

As a participant of an online lecture via alfaview, various functions and settings are available to you, which are explained in more detail below.

The starting point is an existing connection to an online lecture room, i.e. you are in one of the rooms of your faculty.

What you have to do

  1. I want other participants to hear me

To do this, click on the microphone icon    to unlock your microphone before you speak. Alternatively, you can also control the microphone with a keyboard key by setting Push-to-Talk (see Helpcard 10-025).

    • The microphone is activated (visually recognizable by the coloured marking of the microphone icon and other participants can now hear you.

    • If you are not using a headset, activate echo suppression. This can be found by clicking on the gear icon at the top right, below the voice activation level (see also HelpCard FAQ aview-1035).

  2. I would like to work in a group

To do this, open the list of participants  (icon with two people) and switch to any group (A-J) by clicking on "Enter".

    • Your username should now be displayed below the group name of the group you joined.

    • Within a group, you will only hear participants who are in the same group as you.

    • The starting point after entering an online lecture is always the top group with the name of the selected conference (without designation group A-J). Do not forget to return to this group if necessary.

  3. I would like to pause my participation briefly without having to leave the room

Press the coffee cup icon in the top menu bar.

    • Your connection will be paused: the microphone and video image recording will be disabled until you return.

    • Other participants and moderators can tell that you are on break by a "Taking a Break" marker next to your username.

    • Click again on the coffee cup icon or the larger, "You are currently taking a break" dialogue that appears, to end the break again.

  4. I would like to adjust my volume

    • The gray dot marks the starting point of the recording level of the recorded and transmitted sounds and can be readjusted if necessary according to the volume.
When you speak, your blue deflection should be above the gray dot. Guideline values are values between 30 and 45.

    • Quieter background noises fall below the set start point of the recording level and are not transmitted.

  6. I want to hide my video image (if a webcam has been connected).
