Creating groups (public rooms)

CHAT 10-050

What you need to know

In Matrix you can create private (see Helpcard Internal link opens in the same window:Creating groups (private rooms) (CHAT 10-040)) or public groups (or rooms) (instructions further down on this helpcard). Public groups can be entered independently by anyone who has the room link.
This is useful if you want to create a large group but do not want to invite all participants individually.
You as the group administrator can also remove people from the group if you do not want them to be part of the group.

What you have to do

  1. First create a private room

    • On the left side, next to Rooms, click on the plus icon "Add room" (see Fig. 1.1).

    • Select the "New room" option.

    • Via "Explore public spaces" you can join other public spaces.

    • Give the room a name and click "Create room".

    • The private room is created and you are in the chat window of the room.

    • The room is initially listed as "Empty room" on the left in the bar under "Rooms". After refreshing the view, you will find the room in the list under the name you have given it.

  2. Transforming the private space into a public space

    • Click on the info icon in the upper right corner (see Fig. 2.1).

    • The room information opens.

    • Open the room settings in the room information (see Fig. 2.2).

    • You are in the first tab "General".

    • Scroll down to local address.

    • Click on "Show more" and set a local address (see Fig. 2.3). Add them afterwards.

    • The address is listed in the "Local Addresses" section.

    • Click on the Security tab.

    • At "Who can enter this room", activate "Everyone who knows the room link (except guests)".

    • Guests are people from other Matrix federations.

    • In "Who can read the previous chat history" you could also change it to "Members (after joining)" if needed.

    • We recommend leaving the default settings for "Roles and permissions". This is where you define which rights room administrators, moderators and the default role have.
You assign your role permissions to individual persons (see Step 4) at another point.

    • Under "Notifications" you can store an individual tone.

    • Close the room settings by clicking on the cross in the upper right corner.

  3. Allowing people access to the room

    • If you have not yet opened the room information, click on the info icon in the upper right corner.

    • Click on "Share room".

    • Copy the link generated there to your clipboard to invite others to your space.

  4. Tip: You can also address a person directly in a group using @username.
