Moderating a matrix group

CHAT 10-055

Note for Windows users

After using the automatic update function (update from 27.02.2025) of the Element Client, you may no longer be able to open the app - to resolve the problem, please reinstall the app via the manufacturer's website.

What you need to know

The person who creates a group has the role of the administrator.
Administrators can change the permissions of other users and "promote" them to moderators, for example. They can also change the visibility of the chat history.

In the default settings, Moderators can ...
- change the settings of a room
- kick other users (but not the administrators) from the room and also ban them permanently
- remove messages from others
- change the name, picture and theme of the room

People invited / joined to a room (or group) initially have the default role. The default role can chat with other people and invite people to a room.

What you have to do

  1. As administrator you want to assign moderation or administration rights to other group members?

    • If you have not yet opened the room information, click on the info icon at the top right (see Fig 1.1).

    • The room information opens.

    • Below "About" click on “persons” and then on the person to whom you want to assign a different role (see Fig. 1.1).

    • The contact information will open.

    • At "Role" you can change the role of a contact from the corresponding group (= private room) via a drop-down menu.

    • Thus, for example, you can also give those with default roles administrator rights, or give someone moderation rights.

    • By default, moderators can:
      - change the settings
      - remove other users (but not administrators) from the room and ban them
      - delete messages from others
      - change the name, picture and theme of the room

  2. The so-called administrator tools allow moderators and administrators to moderate a matrix group.
To open these tools, proceed as follows:

    • Open the contact information of a contact (see Step 1).

    • The contact information with the "Options" and the "Administrator tools" opens.

    • Administrators and moderators can now use the administrator tools and, for example, ban people with default roles from a room.

    • Moderators cannot kick administrators out of the room. However, they can remove recently sent messages from administrators.

    • In public rooms (groups), you can also initially kick people from a room as a "warning". Only after "banishing" can this room then no longer be entered by the person.
