Installing the chat client

What you need to know

To be able to use Matrix conveniently, please install a client (chat client = desktop application or app for mobile devices that allows you to access a chat server). Your user-specific settings are saved in a chat client and you no longer need to explicitly log out.

As well as the ‘Element’ client, there are other free chat programmes that can be used to access the Matrix server. You can find a list here: External link opens in a new window:https://matrix.org/clients.
The IMZ IT recommendation for a chat client is ‘Element’, which is why the following instructions describe how to install the Element chat client.

Apart from a certain loss of convenience, it is also possible to access the HFU chat directly in the browser. If you do not need a client and prefer to access the chat directly via the browser, please follow the Helpcard Internal link opens in the same window:Chat access via browser login (CHAT 10-005).

What you have to do

  1. Go to the External link opens in a new window:Element download page.

    • For mobile devices, you can get the client from the App or Playstore by entering “Element X” into the search bar.

  2. Download a chat client suitable for your device and operating system.

    • The application can be downloaded for Windows, Mac and Linux.

  3. Install the application on your system.

    • The installation of Element, or Element X, is now complete.

  4. Once installation is complete, the "Element" application will open on your desktop or mobile device.
