Setting up a Learning Path course

FELIX 10-005

What you need to know

With a Learning Path course, you can visualise learning progress (progress indicator in the upper right corner or as a progress bar on the left) using completion criteria. As a result, the Learning Path course serves an informational purpose for participants and instructors.
Learning Path courses are therefore particularly well-suited for self-study courses, but also for blended learning concepts and, in many cases, for mapping administrative processes.

Tip: Try out the “Learning Path” course type from a participant’s perspective:

This helpcard explains how to create a learning path course.

Learning path courses can be created...
... (Step 1) using a course template
... (Step 2) without a course template
... (Step 3) by duplicating a “traditional” course.
Reversing this process is only possible via the “Import course modules” option (see Internal link opens in the same window:Importing course elements from another course helpcard (FELIX 30-005))!

On the Internal link opens in the same window:Configuring a Learning Path course and making it accessible helpcard (FELIX 10-006), you’ll learn how to configure settings in the learning path and insert course modules.

A learning path can only be made accessible to those with an HFU account.

What you have to do

  1. Set up a Learning Path course with a course template

    • Log in to FELIX with your HFU account.

    • In the authoring area on the right, click the “Create” button, and then click “Course from Template”.

    • The “Create Course from Template” dialog box opens.

    • In the dialog box that opens, you can search for and select available templates from the options “Favorites,” “All,” “My Templates,” “Shared with me,” and “Search.”

    • Click on the green “All” text.

    • All templates are displayed here − your own, those shared with you, and all LS templates.

    • Select the 05_Learning_Path_Module-Course_(Mustermann)_LS-Template, then click “Next”.

    • Enter a title for your event and click “Create”.

    • Do not use umlauts, and avoid all special characters except (), /\, -, and _. For clarity, use the following naming convention:
Title_ (degree program, if applicable) _ (your last name), Example: Marketing_WNB_(Huebner).

    • The Learning Path course is created, and the settings window opens.

  2. Set up a learning path course without a course template

Log in to FELIX with your HFU account.
Click in the "Authoring" area (top).
Click on "Create" (top right) and select "Course". The course type "Classic" is preset.
Select "With learning path" or "With learning progress".

    With learning path
    1. Use this option to create a learning path course with a sequential order:
Participants must “complete” modules linearly from top to bottom.
You can only “jump” between modules if this is configured for a specific section (see Configuring and making a Learning Path Course accessible (FELIX 10-006)).
This is useful, for example, for topics that build on one another.

    2. Enter a title for your event and click "Create".

      • Do not use umlauts and avoid all other special characters except (), /\, -, _. Use the following routine for clarity:
Title_ if applicable, degree program _ (your last name), example: Marketing_WNB_(Huebner).

      • The learning path course is created. The settings open.

    3. After you have created your learning path (see Internal link opens in the same window:Configuring a Learning Path course and making it available helpcard (FELIX 10-006)), make it findable and accessible to students (see Internal link opens in the same window:Publishing a course (Status), selecting access type, and cataloging helpcard (FELIX 10-030)).

    With learning progress
    1. With this option you create a Learning Path without sequence.
Participants can, like in a classical course, "jump" between course elements.

Mandatory course elements must still be completed for visible learning progress - but it is not necessary to complete one element to be able to see another. The completion of course elements can still be used for self-structuring and is displayed in the bar (left) and in the learning progress.

      • The learning path course is created and the settings open.

    3. After you have created your learning path (see Internal link opens in the same window:Configuring a Learning Path Course and making it available helpcard (FELIX 10-006)), make it discoverable and accessible to students (see Internal link opens in the same window:Publishing a course (Status), selecting access type, and cataloguing helpcard (FELIX 10-030)).

  3. Duplicate a conventional course to a Learning Path
Log in to FELIX with your HFU account.
Select a course that you would like to convert into a Learning Path.

    • Under Administration, click "Duplicate to Learning Path course".

    • The conventional course remains unchanged.

    • The course is copied and a Learning Path course is created.
The course view opens. Carry out the following steps to ensure functionality in the Learning Path course.

    • The desired configuration should be checked manually.
Although a conversion takes place, so that all course elements with contents (such as inserted materials) are preserved, it is necessary to check the course elements manually to ensure a desired progression within the course. Manual configuration is especially important for recurring course elements such as a "link list" or a "forum", which do not require completion.

    • A Learning Path course cannot be duplicated into a conventional course! However, elements from a Learning Path course can be imported into a conventional course (see Helpcard 30-005).
