Inserting a video course element

FELIX 30-140

What you need to know

With the help of the "Video" course element, you can integrate videos in MP4 format into your course. You can use your own videos or videos from external sources. Before you integrate a video directly into your course with a course element, the video must first be imported as an independent resource.

We ask you not to upload your videos directly to FELIX, but to the university's media portal, otherwise we will have capacity problems in FELIX in the long run. All help for uploading videos on the media portal and integrating them into FELIX can be found External link opens in a new window:here.

What you have to do

  1. Click on "Import" or on "Import URL" in the authoring area and select the desired video (only MP4 format possible!), or copy the link to the video into the "URL" field. Give the video a title and click on "Import" again.

    • The page for editing the information opens.

  2. If desired, give the video a description and click "Save" at the bottom.

  3. Select "Video Configuration" under "Administration".

    • Under "Configure Poster" you can define a start image for the video.

    • In the "Chapters" section, you can subdivide the video into individual chapters.

    • Under "Annotations" you can place annotations at certain points in the video.

    • In the "Quiz" area, you have the option of placing questions about the video directly below the video.

  4. Open the corresponding course in which you want to insert the video.
In the course, under "Administration" (top left), click "Course Editor".

    • The course editor will open.

  5. In the course structure (left), activate the course element under which the new element is to be inserted.
Under "Insert course elements" (above) in the category "Knowledge transfer" select the "Video" element. Alternatively, you can use the "Quick-Add" search function.

    • You can also move the element later by dragging and dropping.

  6. To rename the course element, enter the title that is displayed in the course in the "Title" field. If necessary, abbreviate the title in the "Title in course menu" field. "Save" your entries.

    • The "Title in course menu" is displayed on the left side of the structure. Since the structure is fixed to a certain width, a maximum of 25 characters is recommended.

    • Under "Insert additional information" you can enter e.g. learning objectives and instructions for learners.

    • Under "Visibility" and "Access" you can regulate the visibility and access to the element if required, e.g. depending on the group or date (see Helpcard 30-000).

  7. Open "Select or import video" under "Select video" and select the desired video (only MP4 format possible!).

    • If you haven't imported a video yet (steps 1-3), you can do so by clicking "Import" (top right).

    • In the "Options" section you can make various settings, such as allow video comments, give a video rating, etc.

  8. Click the red cross (top right) to close the course editor. Select the "Publish automatically" option to publish the change.

    • The new element is not displayed in the course view until it has been published.

  9. Select the video element in the course view.

    • The home page of the video (poster) will be displayed and you can start the video by clicking on the arrow.

    • If you have defined individual chapters in the video configuration, students can directly navigate to the chapters at the bottom right of the video.
