Configuring visibility and access

FELIX 30-002

What you need to know

You should only restrict the visibility or access of individual course elements if this makes didactic sense at certain points in your course (e.g., make course content visible/accessible at a later point in time, make course content visible/accessible depending on an assessment).

Basically, the following applies:
(1) visibility always constrains access; and
(2) all elements directly subordinated to this structure element inherit the visibility and/or access rules set on a structure element.

Maybe our video clip will also help you here?

What you have to do

  1. In your course, under "Administration", click "Course editor".

    • The course editor will open.

  2. Select the course element whose visibility or access you wish to restrict.

    • Avoid restricting visibility or access on the top structural element, because this restriction will then apply to all elements of the course.

  3. Select the "Visibility" or "Access" tab.

    • If you restrict "Access", the element will be seen by students but cannot be opened.

  4. In the opened tab, select the desired restriction type and press "Save".

    • With the "Blocked for learners" option the content of the course element is only visible or accessible for coaches and owners of the course and is invisible or inaccessible for all other users. Further configuration options can no longer be selected.

    • With the "Depending on date" option, for example, you can make the element visible/accessible only at a later point in time.

    • With the "Depending on group" option you determine for which group(s) the element is visible/accessible.

    • The "Depending on assessment" option allows you to make the visibility/access dependent on other elements (Test, Assessment, Task and Structure). For example, it is possible to make an assessment questionnaire visible/accessible only to those course participants who have passed a test.

    • With the "Depending on attribute" option you can make the visibility/access dependent on certain user attributes. User attributes are properties associated with the respective HFU user account (e.g. faculty, programme, etc.).

    • The "Only in assessment mode" option is useful if the element is to be shown in an active exam mode.

    • The  "Apply rules also for owners and tutors" option only appears (with the exception of the first " Blocked for learners" restriction) if one of the above restrictions is selected and then also applies the selected restriction to owners/coaches.

  5. Click the red cross (top right) to close the course editor. Select the "Yes, automatically" option to publish the change.

    • The course view will open.
