Setting up Cisco AnyConnect under Linux

VPN 10-040

What you need to know

The Cisco AnyConnect software allows you to access only internally released services of the university from outside. After connecting, you are a participant in a virtual private network (VPN) and will receive an IP address from the address range of Furtwangen University.

To carry out the installation you need a working internet connection and a browser (Mozilla Firefox or similar).

What you have to do

  1. Login: Open your browser and call up the following address:
Log in with the data of your HFU account (see figure 1.1).

  2. Now click on AnyConnect (see Figure 2.1) and then on Start AnyConnect (see Figure 2.2).

    • The "Download & Install" area will open.

  3. Download: Click on the blue "Download for Linux" area (see Figure 3.1) and follow the "Instructions" on the download page to download the VPN client.

    • The installation package is downloaded (see Figure 3.2).

  4. Check the rights for the installation script and mark the item under "Run" "Run file as program".

  5. Run the script.

    • Important note for some Linux distributions: If the directory '/etc/rc.d' does not exist, it must be created manually, otherwise the installer 'vpnsetup.sh' will terminate during a manual installation.

  6. After installation, you will find the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client in your applications.

  7. After the first start please enter the server address vpn.hs-furtwangen.de for the connection.

  8. Enter the data of your HFU account under "Username:" and "Password:" and click on "Connect".

  9. The connection is established and you can now use internal services of the university.
